McDonald’s expanding grocery basics range

Quick-service giant McDonald’s is expanding its recent foray into selling grocery options for drive-thru and takeaway customers.

Over the coming week a number of new basic essentials will be added to the roster of groceries sold, on top of two and three litre bottles of full cream and skim milk, and packs of English muffins and gourmet bread rolls.

Eggs and alternative milk products such as almond, soy and lactose-free milk will soon be available for customers to purchase, according to McDonald’s.

“Bread rolls, English Muffins and milk will also be available to customers who order McDelivery via UberEats, Deliveroo or DoorDash,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said .

“We’re pleased to be able to continue to expand this offering to help the community safety access essential items like milk, bread and eggs, as well as their usual Macca’s favourites.”

McDonald’s is not the only business branching out into providing essentials during the COVID-19 crisis, with many cafes and restaurants adding basic grocery items such as pasta, milk, paper towel and toilet paper to the menu.

And, despite the growing trend, Professor Gary Mortimer doesn’t expect most customers to take up McDonald’s offer of grocery staples with a side of Happy Meal.

“All they’re trying to do is sell inventory that they’ve already booked. The pre-ordered milk would have been delivered for the Cafe, and the English muffins and bread rolls would have been ordered for the breakfast menu,” Mortimer recently told Inside Retail.

“This is the first level of adaption, developing an innovative offer that takes little effort and little risk. If milk and bread is already being delivered they can on sell these products with little risk.”
