Macys latest retailer to furlough workers in wake of COVID-19

Retailer Macy’s is putting a majority of its 130,000 employees on furlough due to the ongoing COVID019 pandemic.

The brand had already temporarily closed all its stores due to the coronavirus outbreak and had been taking measures to maintain financial flexibility, according to a Reuters report.

“While these actions have helped, it is not enough,” the company said in a statement . It is maining the “absolute minimum” workforce to keep basic operations across its brand in play.

It plans to rehire furloughed employees, who are able to keep their health insurance during the furlough, once stores are back open.
