Wegmans has a new mobile app to help get customers in and out of stores more quickly.
Available at select locations, the Wegmans SCAN app lets consumers scan an item’s barcode, as well as the barcodes on produce scales, for any item in the store they want to purchase.
Shoppers can bag their items as they go; once their trip is complete, they scan their phones at a Wegmans’ self-checkout and make payments directly in the app.
They must connect to Wegmans’ in-store Wi-Fi to use the app, and they must enter either the phone number associated with their Shoppers Club loyalty account or scan their keytag.

Digital coupons can be applied in the app while paper coupons can be scanned at the self-checkout.
The app is currently available at select stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. The retailer said it’s planning a phased rollout to more stores if this proves successful.
While stay-at-home orders are lifting in some areas, many retailers are exploring new ways to help consumers shop while promoting social distancing. Walmart previewed an AI-powered produce scale at stores in China that enables shoppers to more easily purchase their own produce without help from associates. A spokesman for Malong Technologies, which makes the scale, told RIS News that it’s also currently working with retailers in the United States.
