How self-service equipment helps define the new normal against COVID-19

We might be living in the biggest economic downswing since the Great Depression, but you wouldn’t know it from all of the activity taking place at self-service equipment manufacturers. The COVID-19 outbreak has unleashed a demand for safety products to allow people to protect themselves from the highly contagious disease, and self-service has a big role to play in making these products available.

As businesses slowly reopen, they are requiring employees and customers to wear safety masks and wash their hands repeatedly, in addition to following social distancing rules. Many also require visitors to have their temperatures taken before entering the premises.

There is no question self-service equipment will play a big role in what many now refer to as the “new normal.”

Self-service equipment manufacturers have introduced machines that dispense packaged safety equipment and liquid sanitizers. Some have introduced touchless transaction technologies, while others are offering devices with sensors that can take temperatures and flag visitors that need additional screening.

Part one in this two-part series on COVID-19 prevention technology explores machines designed to dispense safety products and allows locations to sanitize self-service equipment. Part two will focus on equipment with temperature sensors.

Betson/AMS Vendors/Vagabond

The AMS Touchless Medical machine, a joint effort of Betson Enterprises, AMS Vendors and Vagabond, provides medical facilities, manufacturing plants and other workplaces with a safe way to access personal protection equipment at work.

The machine showcases what the company calls a “clean” design without peripheral components such as bill validators, coin mechanisms or credit card readers, resulting in a touchless experience that requires no physical interaction with the machine, save for retrieving the medical and PPE equipment.

Instant telemetry, live VMS and cashless capabilities are built in to ensure long restock cycles, few service calls and reduced human interactions with the machine while providing operators the ability to stock high-priced medical equipment, manage pricing remotely, and communicate with consumers directly. The machine can also have custom graphics applied to suit account branding needs.

The machine relies on Vagabond’s embedded vīv commerce platform for all purchases. By eliminating the need for additional components, the machine features space for a sixth selection coil, increasing the retail space of the machine by 20% without increasing footprint. Service calls are reduced by up to 90% because there are no peripheral components on the machine to break, which also eliminates touchpoints and human exposure to germs.

Connected Technology Solutions

Connected Technology Solutions has been addressing kiosk sanitation since it began focusing on the needs of health care clients in 2005. In the process of becoming a health care kiosk specialist, the company has developed a sanitation solution that uses UV-C technology, a germicidal light that deactivates the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, destroying their ability to multiply and cause disease without the use of chemicals.

The solution disinfects the screen and the peripherals in 30 seconds or less following every patient’s use of the kiosk. When the patient steps away from the kiosk, it automatically disinfects itself.

Sensors on the kiosk detect when it is in use and when the person has walked away, prompting it to begin a 30-second disinfection cycle. If a person wants to use the kiosk during the cycle, it senses the human presence and suspends the disinfection process, resuming the process when the person walks away.

The technology has not yet been tested on COVID-19 since testing facilities do not have COVID-19 samples to test, said Sandy Nix, company however, it has been disinfecting SARS and MERS, which are other types of coronaviruses.

The UV-C embedding process is an optional upgrade for customers. The kits include ballasts for light bulbs and/or LED lights depending on the particular kiosk, in addition to the software that runs the system.

Kastus

A patented surface-coating technology developed by Kastus is shown to be effective against human coronavirus on treated surfaces, an independent Global testing laboratory has confirmed, according to a press release.

Kastus has previously been proven to block up to 99.99% of surface bacteria and fungi including antibiotic-resistant superbugs such as MRSA and E. coli. Now new independent testing conducted by a global test laboratory has confirmed that the Kastus technology is effective against human coronavirus on coated surfaces.

The Kastus coating is applied and baked in to the top layer of the glass or ceramics surface during the manufacturing process. Once it’s locked in, the Kastus coating protects the underlying touchscreen device, glass or ceramic surface, while its antimicrobial power is always on through the lifetime of the product.

While the coating is primarily designed for use on new products, companies can retrospectively add screen protectors with the coating applied to help provide enhanced protection, meaning it could soon be widely available across products such as touchscreen kiosks in restaurants, shopping centers and airports.
