Macy’s hopes to have all its 775 stores open for business within six weeks and is initially opening 68 next week.
The retailer is one within a small wave of retailers getting back in business after being shuttered due to COVID-19, the coronavirus pandemic.
The staggered opening is being done, in part, to the unknown consumer response after mandates to stay at home to reduce infection rates, according to a MSN report.
May 11 will bring an additional 50 stores opening if infection and death rates from COVID-19 continue to decline.
“We don’t know how consumers will respond,” CEO Jeff Gennettee told MSN, adding he expects initial re-openings to see less than a fifth of normal sales volume.
