COVID-19 pandemic drives e-commerce upward big time

The ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, which has shuttered businesses and forced most to self-isolate, is having a huge impact on e-commerce activity.

The retail segment leading the growth of e-commerce sales is fashion, according to data from Emarsys.

The news comes at a time when the U.S. economy is being described as worse than the Great Recession, with record-breaking unemployment and expansion government bailouts for industries across the spectrum.

E-commerce, however, experience a 59% growth rate just in the last two weeks, according to a press release on the data. In addition to fashion, footwear is a hot commodity for online shoppers.

The data comes from a joint project between customer engagement platform Emarsys and data analytics provider GoodData.

“E-commerce is now more important than it has ever been — both from a business point of view to mitigate cashflow issues and from a consumer point of view to get access to goods and services. The more businesses now look to bolster e-commerce, the more we can offset what is a terrible situation,” said Alex Timlin, senior vice president of verticals at Emarsys, in the release.
