Walmart Expands No-Contact Transactions During COVID-19

Walmart is expanding the ways in which it provides contactless services during the coronavirus health crisis.

Beginning this week, the retailer will offer contactless payment for consumers who use its mobile apps at store registers. While consumers previously had to select a payment method by touching a screen on the self-checkouts, they can now scan a QR code using their smartphones.

The Walmart Pay app will then sync and secure the contact-free transaction.

The company is also providing no-contact pickup and delivery. Items can be loaded into a consumer’s vehicle trunk during store pickups, and signatures will not be required for home deliveries.

“We’re in unprecedented times. The way we’re all living and shopping is changing,” said Janey Whiteside, Walmart executive vice president and chief customer officer. “We know customers want and need to be served differently. And we’re moving quickly to adapt to those changing needs. It’s one way we can help to add some stability to our customers’ lives.”

Walmart was identified as the No. 1 trusted retailer in a March 13-15 consumer survey conducted by the Path to Purchase Institute, over Amazon, Target, Kroger, Costco and others.
