Seasonal hiring remains a challenge for retailers

One in three retail stores were likely understaffed during the 2019 holiday season as just 33% of retail hiring managers report having adequate headcount to meet shopper demand.

That’s a prime finding from a national survey commissioned by Kronos Inc. and conducted online by The Harris Poll.

A whopping 94% of 300 U.S.-based retail hiring leaders faced hiring challenges and the trend reflects the need to have better recruitment strategies in place, according to a press release on the study.

Less than half of retail hiring managers (45%) felt they fully met seasonal hiring goals, and one in four (27%) agreed meeting seasonal hiring goals was more difficult this year than last.

“Ensuring that seasonal workers help to deliver a positive customer experience is one of the biggest challenges facing retailers. To attract and retain the types of employees you want representing your brand during peak seasons — whether the winter holidays, back to school, or summertime — focus on creating an employee experience differentiated by flexible and predictable schedules, the ability to easily swap or pick up extra shifts, opportunities for post-season employment, and, of course, fair treatment and competitive pay,” said Amanda Nichols, senior manager, retail and hospitality practice group, Kronos, in the release.
